The Skunk River Paddlers are a group of Ames area canoeists and kayakers. Most are also members of the Central Iowa Paddlers and Iowa Whitewater Coalition, the ISU Canoe & Kayak Club and other paddling and conservation organizations. SRP members lead and participate in trips within Central Iowa, Iowa, and the upper Midwest. Members organize and participate in paddling workshops and service activities including the "Paddle Iowa Calendar", Story County Conservation's Adopt-a-Park program and Partner's Spring Festival, Story County Hikes and "Along the Skunk" presentations, the Great Ames Adventure Race, and development of the SKUNK RIVER WATER TRAIL. SRP also hosts the websites of the Squaw Creek Watershed Coalition and the Central Iowa Paddlers.

• Join ISU students on a mission with the Skunk River Navy.   Dr. Colbert leads paticipants in activities including IOWATER monitoring, Nature Mapping, mussel inventories, bank stabilization and river clean-ups.
• Check out opportunities with Story County Conservation and the Iowa DNR.
• Assist The Nature Conservancy of Iowa at the Ames High Prairie.
• Join the Friends Of The Prairie Learning Center at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge or help out in the bookstore or seed lab.
• Visit Doolittle Prairie or the Ames High Prairie to see what the Iowa landscape looked like pre-settlement. Visit the Iowa Native Lands and INHF Prairie Management and Restoration websites and subscribe to the IPN or INPS mailing lists to keep abreast of prairie issues and activities.
